Scientists in Japan categorised 642 men and 441 women with an average age of 51.2 as “slow, normal or fast” eaters.

Over a period of five years they found that 11.6% of fast eaters developed metabolic syndrome compared with 6.5% of normal eaters and just 2.3% of slow eaters.
