No one wants E. coli wreaking havoc in their sweet spot. Thongs can create the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and infections to develop, especially if you sweat in them. They are probably the worst thing to wear underneath your yoga pants on a regular basis.

Yoga pants have become a staple of the modern woman’s wardrobe, but the way many of us wear them is actually harming the health of our vaginas.

So what’s a more sanitary option? The most hygienic answer may be absolutely nothing.

Yep, going commando.

Before you settle into a bout of shock, you should know it’s more popular than you think. In fact, according to small study conducted by Cottonelle (the toilet paper company), eight percent of women claim to always go commando when wearing yoga pants while 25 percent claim to do it sometimes.

Gynecologists actually recommend going commando as a much more sanitary option than thongs, provided that your pants are gusseted to reduce chaffing risk. It’s perfectly hygienic. Of course, you should definitely wash the pants in between wears if you’re going sans undies.

When you ditch the thong, there’s no need to worry about yeast or bladder infections. Yeast thrives in moist, warm environments, so nixing that extra sweaty layer may actually do you some good. As for bladder infections, the vagina has its own protections, so it doesn’t matter what you wear.
