Roll out your yoga mat for a free Pop-Up class

Yoga mats are popping up in the weirdest spots — even City Hall — as part of an invitation to stretch body, mind and soul.

In what may be a first for South Florida, the mayors of Miramar and Miami Gardens are teaming up to offer free Pop-Up Yoga classes at different locations throughout each of their cities.

“The whole aim is to get residents interested in getting fit,” Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam said. “You only have one vessel. And the more we invest in our bodies, the better we feel about ourselves.”

The Mayors’ Pop-Up Yoga series is offering eight free classes on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., with locations alternating between Miramar and Miami Gardens each week.

The hourlong classes are held at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at different spots throughout each city. The program began in June and continues through Aug. 9.

Messam and Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert are using social media to post the location of each class. Yogis can check Twitter or Facebook on Monday to find out where they’ll be rolling out their mats later that week.

Miramar yoga teacher Rocki Roland is one of two instructors leading the classes.

“Yoga is for everybody,” Roland said. “You don’t have to be a size zero. Yoga is for every single body type. We’re focusing on the breath and the present.”
