India scrambles to control Zika outbreak

As Jaipur – known as the “pink city” – is a major tourist hotspot, there are fears that domestic and foreign visitors could not only contract the illness but contribute to its spread.

Zika is a mosquito-borne infection, spread by the Aedes mosquito in the same way as malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya. But cases of transmission via sex or blood transfusion have also been reported.

Most people who come in contact with the Zika virus do not show any symptoms, though in a few cases it can cause paralysis.
